A common issue that comes up when converting a garage for some other use is the floor and how warm it should be. If you are thinking of doing a garage conversion, such as transforming your garage into a large home office, or if you want to build a gym in it, you will have to consider how to improve the floor.
Typical garage floors are concrete and do not have insulation so your focus should be on making your floor warmer and more durable, This you could be accomplished by lining the floor with wood strips and laying plywood on top.
Be sure, however, to use only pressure-treated wood or a protective layer of felt paper to prevent the wood from directly touching the concrete. When you are done with the floor, the next item to consider in your garage
conversion agenda should be the walls. Check them out first; it is very much possible that your walls do not sit evenly with the foundation. The walls could be set back from the foundation or protrude in other areas. If this is the case, then this will have to be levelled up with studding. This will give you an even wall covering the foundation completely. Also, it will provide enough space for wall insulation, which is highly recommended and may be a requirement for planning approval.
You may also encounter several other obstructions when working on the garage walls and floor. They may include wires, pipes, ducts and other snags to a smooth wall. If the obstructions are small like wirings or small pipes, you can modify the studding so these obstructions can be hidden in the walls. If the obstruction is big such as a water heater or anything functional that you need to access from time to time, you can build a frame that will enclose the object. For example, if you want to make provisions for a water heater, build a frame and cover the three sides then make the fourth side removable for easy access.
You may have to secure planning permission if you plan to do a garage conversion. The garage conversion tips given here are purely suggestions and meant only to give you working ideas. Garages differ from one another and you will need to adjust the methods and materials described above to meet your own circumstances. It is also best to call in a professional building company who can advise on these matters.
